Locality:  Steyterville
Distribution:  Eastern Cape,
From Uitenhage to Jansenville, Graaf-Reinett and Somerset East.
Description:  The main stem is buried with many smaller stems branching from it.  The "head" measures 50 cm in diameter.
Flower:  A cluster of sweet-scented terminal cyathia are formed.  The involucres are filled with white wooly bracteoles.
Propagation:  Seeds and cuttings.
Common names:  The true "vingerpol".

Point of interest:   "esculenta" means edible, Marloth told farmers to feed these plants to their stock during droughts as they are highly nutritious.
