Distribution: Found in moist, sandy areas in the Springbok area in Namaqualand, Northern Cape, ZA.

Description:  A perennial herb with a bulb.  The plant can grow to a height of about 30cm.  There are two lanceolate leaves. 

Flower: Many mauve flowers are borne on a single stem, the tips of the flower darken to purple as they get older.  Flowering occurs in August and early September.

Common Names: Cape Cowslip. Viooltjie (Afrikaans), English translation, "violin".  Naeltjie (Afrikaans), English translation, "needle".

Point of interest:  There 59 species of lachenalia in SA, 17 occur in Namaqualand.
