Distribution: Found in flat sandy places throughout Namaqualand, Calvinia and the dry parts in the Southern Cape.

Description: A perennial herb with a bulb, it has two opposite leaves that lie flat on the ground, they are broad, entire, ovate and entire.  The leaves are 17 cm long and 15 cm broad.

Flower: Flowers are white with many stamens borne on in a dense head with many reddish-margined bracts.

Common names:  Suikerkannetjie (Afrikaans), English translation, "Sugar Can", botterkannetjie (Afrikaans), English translation,"butter can", ramblom (Afrikaans), English translation, "ram flower", karring (Afrikaans).

Point of Interest:  There are 5 spp of massonia in SA of which 2 occur in Namaqualand.  The bulb is edible and the nectar is sweet.
